Dental Emergencies

Toothache:  Clean the area around the sore tooth well.  Have your child rinse with warm salt water and use dental floss to free any food or debris that may be trapped in or between the teeth.  It is important not to place aspirin on the gum or the aching tooth.  If your child’s face is swollen, a cold compress may offer some relief.  Acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be taken for pain.  If your child has spontaneous pain, waking at night in pain or is swollen, call our office.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek:  Ice should be applied to bruised areas.  If your child is bleeding, gentle but firm pressure can be applied.  If bleeding does not stop within 15 minutes or cannot be controlled with pressure, call our office or take your child to a hospital emergency room.

Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth:  Find your child’s tooth.  Handle the tooth by the top (crown), not the root.  Don’t clean the tooth and handle the tooth as little as possible.  You may gently rinse the root and reinsert it back into its socket.  Have your child hold the tooth in place by biting on guaze or a clean cloth.  If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport it in a cup of milk.  Call our office immediately as time is a critical factor in saving your child’s tooth.

Knocked-Out Baby Tooth:  Contact your pediatric dentist during business hours.  Your child needs to be examined the next buisness day to evaluate the remaining teeth.  Baby teeth are not usually reimplanted due to potential damage to the developing permanent tooth.  This is not usually an emergency, and in most cases, no treatment is necessary.

Broken Tooth:  Rinse dirt from your child’s mouth and the injured area with warm water.  Place a cold compress on the face in the area of injury.  Try to find and save any broken fragments.  Call our office immediately because dental attention is sometimes needed right away.

Possible Broken or Fractured Jaw:  Go to the nearest hospital emergency room.
